Relief Collagraph: the Printer Collage. I nstructor: Paul Harcharik. M ondays, 1-3 pm. Begins January 17; 8 weeks. $120. The relief collagraph is a textural collage approach to relief printmaking. Unlike woodcuts or linoleum blocks where you have to carve away the areas you don't want to print, the collagraph plate is constructed using various materials. For example: papers - copy paper to watercolor paper, fabrics - corduroy to cheesecloth, and found objects - string, coins, gummed paper reinforcement rings, all of which have unique textures. Once the plate is finished, it's sealed with gloss polymer and can be printed in various ways using stencils, multiple colors on the single plate or as a single color print. The course will also cover making an edition of prints and print nomenclature as well as the storing and presentation of prints. Materials list will be provided. Harcharik, who has an MFA from Penn State and has taught locally at UNC-A and Montreat, is represented in museums nationwide.

A parent must attend weekly private lessons with the student, acting as the "home teacher" and supervising daily practice. Skills are mastered in small steps, always with the support and encouragement of the parents and teacher. Violins can be rented locally from Acoustic Corner. Knowles, a graduate of Oberlin College, has been teaching Suzuki violin since 1984, and has served on the faculty of the Furman University Suzuki Institute for many years.
