FALL CLASSES 2010
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts, located in the old City Hall at 225 W. State Street, announces its spring class schedule. For questions, or to register, call 828/669-0930 or the appropriate number for the teacher, if listed.

Slight variations in the schedule may occur, and classes will be canceled if sufficient registrants are not received. Please check the Events page and the Calendar pages of this website for additional information.

VISUAL ARTS

Bob Travers teaches art classes to kidsDrawing & Painting classes. Instructor: Bob Travers. Tuesdays, ongoing, depending on openings; fee is $60 for 4 lessons.  Four different weekly class sessions available for kids (age 8+), teens, & adults.  Each class is appropriate for beginner through advanced.  Students work at their own pace, with their choice of medium & subject.  Bob Travers is an award-winning wildlife artist who teaches in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor and more.  (Wednesday classes will be added as needed.) blue ridge by cheryl keeferFall Plein Air Painting. Instructor: Cheryl Keefer, Tuesdays, 8:30 – 11:30 am; October 5, 12, 19, 26 – Make-up class Nov. 2. Cost per session is $125. Class meets at the Montreat Gate, then proceed to the site for the day. A supply list will be provided to registrants, who may work in oil, acrylic or watercolor. new class  From Collage to Assemblage with a Master. Instructor: Paul Harcharik. Mondays, 3:30-5:30. Begins September 20. $70 for 4 weeks, or $180 for 12. A series of 3 sessions, 4 classes each, designed to introduce simple collage techniques combined with painting & drawing media, making transfers from photocopied materials, low relief sculptural collage & assemblage. Bring scissors. Materials list will be provided. Harcharik, who has an MFA from Penn State and has taught locally at UNC-A and Montreat, is represented in museums nationwide. Registration Deadline for 1st session: September 17.


pottery classesPottery Classes: 2-hour classes are available at various times Mon.-Thurs. Fee is $90 for 4-weeks, or $180 for an 8-week session, which includes limited Open Studio practice times, plus a $40 Lab fee that covers 25 lbs. of clay, glazing and firing. Instructors: AJ Reisman, Judi Ashe, Geoff Bird, Gwen Ottinger, along with Guest Teachers for Workshops. Registration Deadline is 2 days prior to first class. DANCE AND CREATIVE MOVEMENT

Yoga in Motion taught by Viniyoga Instructor Renate Rikkers. Two ongoing classes for adults: Begins Sept. 7 & 9: 1) Tuesdays: 6:30-8 pm and; 2) Thursdays: 9-10:30 am. Fee: $55 for 6 weeks. Improve posture, balance, and strength through the practice of yoga postures. Some yoga experience is necessary. With questions and to register, call Renate at 298-9988.


dancer bowsModern Dance taught by Sondra Stamey. For grades 2-5. Begins Tuesday, Sept. 14: 3:30-4:30 pm. $50 for a 6-week class. Registration deadline: September 10. Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dancing that uses the body’s gravity and expresses emotion. Students will dance in bare feet; they should wear leggings or footless tights and either a leotard, tank top, tee- or sweat shirt; no ballet costumes. No previous dance experience required, but is welcome. Stamey, a graduate in dance education from Meredith College, has been a visiting artist in the schools and taught in various dance studios in NC.

 

 

MUSIC

new class  Kindermusik™. Instructor Maria Wood. A nationally certified program to teach music, rhythm and more to pre-schoolers accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. Two classes will be offered: Newborn-18 months, Tuesday, 10-10:45 am; 18 months through 3 years, Tuesday, 11:15 am - noon. Dates: September 21 – January 11. Free demo class on August 31, signup is requested. Tuition: $250, includes all materials – books, CD’s, etc., $35 non-refundable deposit required at registration. Wood, who has worked 15 years in the field of children’s music with David Grover, is the Acting President of the National Children’s Music Project. jam fiddlesJAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians). Instructors Natalya Weinstein and Doug Sharkey, along with guest musicians. For grades 4-8. Starts with Registration and 1st class on Wednesday, September 15 from 3:30-5 pm. A parent must attend first rehearsal for registration and instrument information. JAM students learn to play traditional Appalachian tunes by ear and play with small groups on banjo, guitar and fiddle. Some instruments available for rental. Tuition is $75 for 10 weeks. JAM is a regional program; Black Mountain Center for the Arts hosts the Buncombe County classes.

 


BMYC in concert

Black Mountain Youth Chorale. Director Aline Carillon with Accompanist Penny Rose. For grades 4-8. Starts Wednesday, September 29 from 3:30 -4:30 pm, meeting at The Learning Community (Science Building) at Camp Rockmont on Lake Eden Road. A parent must attend the initial meeting on 9/29 at 4:30 pm for registration and information. Students learn 2-and 3-part harmonies in a variety of genres of music and make friends with peers from other schools. Concert is scheduled for January 23 at the Center for the Arts. Tuition is $75 for 15 weeks.


keithie knowlesSuzuki Violin. Instructor: Keithie Knowles. Tuesdays, 2:30-6:30 pm. Starts Sept. 14. Fee: $28 per ½ hour (includes 1 monthly group lesson). Age 4-6 with parent. Suzuki violin is a method and educational philosophy used in teaching instrumental music to young children, using the principles of language development. Initially, learning is by hearing or rote, with many repetitions. Reading comes later. This is a long-term commitment. Suzuki students listen daily to recordings of music to be performed, beginning with simple folksongs. A parent must attend weekly private lessons with the student, acting as the "home teacher" and supervising daily practice. Skills are mastered in small steps, always with the support and encouragement of the parents and teacher. Violins can be rented locally from Acoustic Corner. Knowles, a graduate of Oberlin College, has been teaching Suzuki violin since 1984, and has served on the faculty of the Furman University Suzuki Institute for many years.

WORKSHOPS

wendy outlandnew workshop  Galleries 101, led by WHO Knows Art consultant, Wendy Outland. Saturday, September 18, 10 am – noon. Register by September 15 for $35; after 9/15 fee is $45. This workshop provides valuable tips to artists on how to target professional galleries, both online and in person, and helps you learn to define if a gallery is a good match for you and your art. Outland (www.whoknowsart.biz) was the first employee of Asheville’s Blue Spiral 1, where she worked for nearly twelve years. Under her management, BS1 grew to become one of the Southeast’s premier fine art and craft galleries.

 

 


Drystone Stacked Wall Workshop
Workshop with stonemason Joe Dinwiddie of Dinwiddie Drystone Masonry, LLC. Workshops are scheduled from 9-5 on Saturdays, July 17, & September 18. Cost is $100. For more information, visit www.drystonejoe.com.  To register, call (828) 318-4333 or email mason@drystonejoe.com.  Each workshop will cover the fundamentals of drystone masonry for landscape projects - how to design projects, figure costs for materials, tool selection and use, safety, and building methodology. There will be 1 hour of classroom instruction, 6 hours of hands-on construction and capping of a freestanding drystone sitting wall next to the pottery studio and rainwater garden of BMCA, and a one hour lunch break/ drawing of plans for participant's own projects. Participants should bring safety glasses, a tape measure, a mason's or brick hammer, snug fit work gloves, and a lunch.
