Dr. Don King to Speak at BMCA’s “Books and Brown Bag” about New “C.S. Lewis Bible” Montreat College English professor and internationally renowned C.S. Lewis expert Dr. Don King will be the guest speaker for a Black Mountain Center for the Arts Books and Brown Bag luncheon on Thursday, December 9 at noon. Black Mountain Books is sponsoring the event. King’s topic will be the newly released “C.S. Lewis Bible,” one of the most anticipated Bibles of contemporary times. King served on the Advisory Board; his contribution was to relate passages from Lewis’s poetry that fit various scriptural themes or supported specific verses. In time for holiday giving, copies of the Bible will be available for purchase, along with books authored by King, for which he will be available to sign. The Center is located at 225 W. State Street in the original City Hall. Call 828/669-0930 for more information. Pre-publication publicity indicates that the “C.S. Lewis Bible” consists of “thought-provoking meditations from over 600 selections of beloved author Lewis’s own spiritual writings (that) are paired with corresponding Bible passages in ‘The C. S. Lewis Bible,’ which utilizes the New Revised Standard Version. These selections are for contemplation and devotional reading. Other features include introductory essays on C. S. Lewis’s view of scripture and indexes to guide readers to each reading from C. S. Lewis.”
King will be speaking about the new publication and Lewis’s own love of reading the Bible. King, editor of Christian Scholar’s Review, is the author of over sixty articles on C. S. Lewis, as well as books “ C. S. Lewis, Poet: The Legacy of His Poetic Influence,” “Hunting the Unicorn: A Critical Biography of Ruth Pitter,” and “Out of My Bone: The Letters of Joy Davidman.” Lewis devotees are aware of many of the writings of C. S. Lewis, including “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “The Screwtape Letters,” “The Allegory of Love,” “The Space Trilogy,” “Surprised by Joy,” and more. Harper Collins notes, “Clive Staples Lewis (1898—1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English literature at England’s Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. His major contributions in literary criticism, children’s literature, fantasy literature, and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience. His works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. Visit the C. S. Lewis website at www.cslewis.com.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch to eat during the book talk and question/ answer session. The book signing by King will follow, assisted by Black Mountain Books proprietors Carl and Jean Franklin.
