Our history

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located in the town's old City Hall building. The building was built in 1918. In 1985 Black Mountain built a new City Hall building and planned to tear the old one down. The building remained empty until 1993 when a group of citizens decided to try and save it. They spent 7 years raising money and renovating the building to what it is today.

The old water department was housed in what is now our main offices. The now theatre on the main floor were offices for aldermen. The top level of our building held the town library (now our gallery) and the firemen's quarters (now our dance studio where over 150 students take weekly classes). The ground floor was the county jail, where you can still see the original bars in the window of what is now an art studio classroom.

Our mission statement

The mission of the Black Mountain Center for the Arts is to bring arts to the people and people to the arts by providing a center for celebrating the arts and a forum for stimulating artistic endeavor.

Our challenge is also to discover ways to honor our unique heritage while introducing community members to art forms that invite them to probe deeply into the values of dignity, respect, and the joy the arts bring to their lives and to the life of the Swannanoa Valley.

Our vision statement

As a multi-purpose arts facility serving a wide cross-section of the community, the goals and objectives of the BMCA are driven primarily by the programming offered both inside and outside the building. Through a comprehensive calendar of yearly programs, the BMCA will create a positive economic impact and raise the local quality of living, as it becomes a focal point of community arts activities.
